… as our SDGs Labs consortium meeting unfortunately could not take place in sunny and beautiful Portugal as initially planned. But no matter what, we still had a great time, worked hard and made some great progress with our labs.

After three intensive days of on-screen meeting in the virtual world, we deserved a long weekend off to recharge our energies. After having done this, we are back now with tons of motivation and fresh ideas – stay tuned and keep following us on our journey!

On Thursday, April 23rd 2020, the University of Vechta hosted a virtual workshop where participants from Wiesenhof and Allos participated as representatives of companies together with partners from the University of Vechta and the Transformationstelle (Coordination Centre for Transformation of Regions with Intensive Agriculture). Jointly, the outcomes of WP1 (our Report on Common Knowledge Base and Needs Analysis) and WP3 (our Report on Transformative Learning Environments and Methods) were reflected upon and learnings for the upcoming work were drawn.

Moreover, the workshop also offered the opportunity to experience new tools of virtual collaboration (“MURAL”-Software), where the future formats and layouts of the SDGs Innovation and Co-Learning Labs were discussed and shaped.

In March, our consortium met two days online to dive further into all the details of WP4, where we will be carrying out two different lab formats: one for already exisiting companies where we will support them to translate the SDGs into their business practices and another one where we bring various stakeholders from the entire value chain of the agribusiness and food production sector together to foster co-learnings and kick-off future collaboration and joint actions.

To make both lab formats as successful as possible we will use the upcoming months to design innovative learning settings that allow our participants to become creative and inspired.

…from 12th to 14th February 2020 and was the second of four events about Climate Change that our consortium partner CEIFAcoop is organizing in Lourinhã (Portugal) in cooperation with the local municipality.

During the first day several presentations took place, covering diverse topic such as water scarcity, irrigation measures, as well as daily challenges local farmers face: on the one hand, the consumers that require extremely low prices for food products and, on the other hand, the chemical industry that offers a lot of low-cost products that actually sink the production costs, in particular the labor costs. Given
this double pressure, it is very difficult for the local farmers to implement changes towards a more sustainable agriculture. During the following poster exhibition, the 30 participants had the opportunity to analyze 12 different posters about the issues at stake – from the contribution of agriculture to climate change up to food waste and organic waste management. Two posters provided information about the SDGs Labs project and the SDGs. The first day finished with a Workshop on Sustainable Cooking.

On the second day guided visits to different places were organized: Quinta da Galeana, a local organic farm of ovine and poultry production, the community garden of Lourinhã (Horta da Lourambi), and Biofrade, one of the most important organic vegetables
farms in Portugal.

On the last day, a field activity was launched by CREIAS-Oeste to show the importance of biodiversity (especially insects) for agriculture. Participants were instructed about the advantages and techniques of planting hedges alongside agricultural fields with autochthonous plants.

Almost 40 participants took part and became familiar with the SDGs. Besides, we also tested an interactive workshop setting for our own Labs series starting in Autumn 2020.

…and we are starting with a conference in Portugal, which will be hosted by our consortium partner CEIFAcoop together with the municipality of Lourinhã in Central Portugal.

The conference is part of a series dedicated to “Climate Change: Quo Vadis, Lourinhã?” and will take part from 14.-16.02.2020. Throughout the 3-days workshop on “Agriculture, Food and Climate” different stakeholders will gather and share their experiences on the topic.

Day 1 will start with a colloquium to introduce the topic, followed by a poster session and discussion before ending the day with a “show cooking” event on healthy food. On Day 2, participants will have the opportunity to visit sustainability-oriented local enterprises and a local ONG initiative. The closing day offers the experience of a hands-on field activity, where participants can actively work on the cultivation of hedges for biodiversity with autochthonous and climate-adapted plants.

We are very happy to also share the great news, that this event is the fruitful outcome of the focus group discussion taking place in the region. If you are interested in participating yourself, register for free via www.ceifacoop.pt

… and it’s time to meet again, this time in Northern Germany, where our scientific co-lead, the University of Vechta, is located. Despite cold and rainy weather outside, we were very productive: besides preparing the final elements for our WP 1 report, we started working on WP3 and 4 already, which aim at transformative and even unusual learning settings that support the SDGs implementation as key drivers of innovation and change in the agribusiness and food production sector.

Our second day was dedicated to a field excursion, where we explored a pig farm (www.goldschmaus.de) and DIL (German Institute of Food Technology).

The last day was used for reflecting on the learnings that we can draw from the first year and what can be improved, both in terms of project flow as well as project coordination.

Building on this, we established an outline for the second project year, which will include plenty of interactive learning elements (our so called SDGs Innovation Labs and SDGs Co-Learning Labs), both specifically for existing companies, as well as for knowledge exchange and shared practices among different stakeholders linked to the agribusiness and food production sector. We are ready for 2020!
